Journal Update 28th January 2005 / Nadi, Fiji

After a night out with my coz Sarah and her hubby Glen where we got very drunk in a bar made completely out of ice and spent a wad in the casino playing roulette.

Hung over we caught the 3 hour flight to Nadi this morning. We have just got to Fiji and it was bloody hot when we arrived. Though now it is starting to rain.

We are planning to get the Bula pass and do a bit of island hopping to the more remote sites. There won't be many internet spots so don't worry if there is a news blackout for a few days.

Journal Update 30th January 2005 / Coral Coast, Fiji

Hi folks
This is our 3rd night tonight in Fiji. It is humid and hot but a bit rainy, so the sea is kind of grey instead of the brilliant blue you see in the books. I have left Joe lying on a hammock under a coconut tree. I hope one doesn't drop on his head! We are somewhere along the Coral coast in one of those budget backpacker resorts. Sleeping in a tent, it is quite cosy though, and not too hot.

We got the local bus down here yesterday with all the local Fijian ladies. I gave up my seat for Grandma and she was quite taken with us after that, offering her advice on how to avoid the local crimes. The bus was only $6 instead of the $100 it usually costs by cab. So Joe was happy he reckoned he got quite a good deal.

We plan to go to one of The Yasawa Islands tomorrow or the day after, apparently the Blue Lagoon was filmed out there so it should be nice. We have been out snorkelling twice today the fish were good, but no coral. The current was really strong and a bit scary to swim in, as the boat kept going away. Still building up the arm muscles a bit.

Journal Update 08th February 2005 / Fiji

I'm having to be very quick as we have just got back from a week island hopping at The Yasawas. All is well and we have seen paradise itself in the wonderful Yasawas. We are both tanned and feeling great. Snorkelling today at South Sea Island was out of this world.

We have made the most of the last few days by sailing around the islands on a vintage 1928 sailing boat called The Sea Spray. Originally it sailed all this way from Scotland. Joe made the very best of drinking the free bar dry (which even included champagne and wine). He was tiddled enough to attempt the jump into the open sea from the boat to swim ashore to Castaway Island where Tom Hanks filmed the movie of the same name. We have a delicious BBQ lunch with sausage, beef and the local mackerel (which was mighty tasty).

We stayed on the boat when everyone got off to meet the local chief and pretended for a short time it belonged to us. We met a bawdy old English couple (who had lived in Australia for 30 years) who were rifling through the cool box looking for another bottle of wine and spent the rest of the afternoon listening to the guys silly jokes. The best of which is as follows:

An Ozzy guy runs in to a bar in NSW crying his eyes out.
Shaking uncontrollably he tells the barman he had just seen a coach load of Poms go over a cliff. The bar man looks at him strangely and says "Well what on earth are you crying for then?" To which he replies "There was an empty seat at the front!!!" boom boom.

With that I will leave you and here's hoping we don't encounter any more bad weather en-route, because Joe had been very accident prone recently (he hit his head on a tree, not once but 3 times, the last time generating loads of blood, and he nearly broke his ankle the other day when he got his foot caught in the anchor rope when he went out spear fishing. He didn't cry though (much).

Exit Fiji Crossing the Date Line To the Cook Islands

Tonight we fly on to The Cook Islands after two weeks of fun in Fiji.

Just in time for our flight the heavens have opened and it is raining like mad, although luckily we missed the cyclone which hit the islands last week.

We cross the date line tonight, which means that we get double Saturdays, which I suppose is much better than double Mondays, even though as we spend our lives lounging and being lazy, it makes little difference now.
