Perth & Fremantle
West Australia
|
|
Kind of travel: Travelling alone
Year of this voyage: 2001
Author's age: 45-60 years

Since we spend most of our time in Bali, it is not so far anymore to go to Australia as this seems
from Europe. From Denpasar in app. 3-4hrs of flight-time, we can reach Darwin, Broome, Cairns or Perth.
After several trips to my friend Dieter Stracke in Darwin, with whom I already visited the
Northern Territories, this time I decided to travel to Perth am Swan River in West-Australia.

Park and Skyline

Perth, founded in 1829, is a nice, modern city, the largest at the West-Coast with app. 1,1 million people.
The early settlement developed slowly until people suddenly discovered gold in 1890.
During short time the amount of inhabitants multiplied by four.

Perth: Park
|
|
The pier at Swan River is right beside Perth's city centre and large, clean park areas. Especially
for Europeans it is amazing how huge and widespread everything is planed and built in Australia. And of
course, here it is still possible to build on big scale.
|
|
Greeneries as far as I can see, huge park landscapes with clean paths for biking and walking. The perfect
place to relax. A generous style of architecture is significant for the architecture of Perth. Close to the
pier I rent a mountain-bike, because here I love to go biking.
I booked a boat trip on Swan-River at the pier in the city centre from Perth to Fremantle, the big
harbour at the Indies Ocean. The Swan-River is very broad. Sailing Yachts with their white sails seem to fly
over the water, and the surfers with their parachutes ... they really fly high through the air. before they
pop down quite hard on the waves for their landing.

Very gentle "Swan Explorer" passes expensive villas, that are built right and left side
along the hills and enrich the interesting countryside. This is supposed to be the most expensive area to
build in Australia. The mild climate and the preferred position have created in this region an extraordinary
wine-culture with famous viticulture. After three hours the anchor goes down and we arrive at Fremantle. I
take my bike from the boat and start to explore this new area of Fremantle.

Fremantle

With just 25.000 inhabitants Fremantle is a quiet city with a very nice flair. You feel the history and the
special atmosphere that lies over this city and its harbour. And this is not just because of the salty taste
of the air air and the seagulls all around.

|

Fremantle Container-Terminal
|
|
Next to the pier I realize immediately, - besides huge cranes of a container-terminal - , the light and
futuristic building of the "Maritime Museums"...
...and close behind "the round house"
from 1831. It is the oldest building of Fremantle. In early days this has been a prison. Today you can have
a gorgeous view over the harbour and the city of Fremantle.

Gerhard Waldner
Born in Ludwigshafen at the River Rhine (Germany), Gerhard was fascinated
to discover foreign countries since his early schooldays. Mostly by bicycle and motorcycle he travelled through
more than 60 countries. During a his life he found enough time to travel to faraway regions, he was interested in.
Since 2000 he is living mostly in his house in Bali with his Javanese wife Wandhansari and
daughter Kimberly. He always felt drawn to the island of Bali, with its people, culture, religion and its countryside.
More than 17.500 islands of the Indonesian archipelago are lying now in front of his doorstep, waiting to be discovered.
